🎤Shaker Stage
Let’s welcome Charlotte Sharpe, Director of Research, Evaluation, and Reporting at Big Think Plus to take the Stage.
What’s a memory you hold very dear?
-I grew up in the central Texas hill country outside of Austin. We lived pretty far from town and had a pretty large piece of wooded property because in those days, it was so remote and there were no utilities so my parents could afford it. One of my favourite memories is just walking our property line with my mom - the trails were very established by us and because some of them were actually old stagecoach trails from hundreds of years ago that were still visible. I loved just walking through the woods with my mom, noticing new Madrone trees that were sprouting up, and appreciating the remoteness and quiet.
A book that left an impression on you:
-Liz Wiseman's Impact Players left a major impression on me. It's all about how to better align your work with what will bring the most value to the team/organization in order to make a real impact in the job you do. I loved the book and still think about it at least weekly! Some of the biggest pieces of advice from that book that I still think about and practice are (1) solving problems instead of just using the same workarounds that we've settled for...even if it's not technically my job, (2) Aligning my agenda with the priorities of my manager and the org, not necessarily around my own goals, (3) making work light by bringing humour, friendliness, and levity to the team I'm on, particularly in long and dull projects or in times of emotional uneasiness on the team.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone starting out in your career?
-My career has been a roller coaster! I've gone from a professor of education to being an instructional designer to now a researcher who straddles product research and learning science. I think the most important thing to those starting out in research fields, particularly around learning, is to be open and curious - genuinely curious! It takes work and intentionality - it's so easy to become closed to new approaches, or even to not know they exist.
-What does being an L&D Shaker look and feel like for you?
To me it looks like bringing kind scepticism to old "truths" about how L&D is "supposed to look" and instead inviting new ideas/perspectives into the ways we build and transform cultures within and across organizations.
〜See you soon
Till then, keep spicing up your learning! 🧠🧂
