🎤Shaker Stage
Let’s welcome Skye Suttie, Senior Manager, Organizational Learning &Development at Openly to take the Stage.
What brings a quiet smile to your face?
-When I hear my students (and I use that term for all career levels/stages) use specific language I used in my training or in conversations, such as: "make the implicit, explicit" or "take out the guesswork."
What’s the biggest challenge you’re facing in your role/business/project right now and how are you tackling it?
-The biggest challenge I'm facing right now is setting my own priorities. I get VERY excited about learning new things and building out learning programs/training, and my instinct is to share what I learn with EVERYONE, all the time! I have to be better about pacing myself, not getting so easily distracted, and managing my time.
What is a common myth about your job or field of expertise?
-I cringe when I hear someone say, "those who can, do and those who can't, teach." First, it's incredibly insulting to educators who have an incredibly challenging job (thinking of my sister who is a high school science teacher and what she has to navigate), and second, it's blatantly false. The best way to know you understand something is to teach it to someone else and then have them teach it back to you or to others. Learning is a unique experience for everyone and those of us in L&D take a great deal into consideration to plan/design/run relevant, applicable, and effective training to meet all of our learners' unique needs. At times, we will fail, but we learn from those mistakes, iterate, and come back even stronger. We consistently disprove this myth time and time again because that's what we do as individuals with growth mindsets.
What does being an L&D Shaker look and feel like for you?
-Being an L&D Shaker for me feels like I've found a community where I can show my authentic unabashed self. I can ask questions, geek out over neuroscience, attend an awesome workshop, build a network and although I work remotely, never feel like I'm alone.
