π€Shaker Stage
Letβs welcome Aimee Swartz, Senior Digital Learning Developer at Healios to take the Stage.
One thing you are hoping will change completely 50 years from now?
-L&D will be rebranded to Performance Enablers (or something like that)
Whatβs the biggest challenge youβre facing in your role/business/project right now and how are you tackling it?
-The foundation of any strong learning ecosystem is shared knowledge. The fast-growing, innovative digital healthcare organisation I work for currently is no exception. Without a clear and structured repository for shared knowledge, people spend an exorbitant time looking for what they need, it takes longer than it needs to for new people to get up to speed, actions are duplicated and practices aren't standardised.
As so often happens good practice, tools and structure for sharing knowledge was overlooked in the start-up years when the fast pace and agile mindset found everyone in execution mode. Now we need to go back and retrofit a solution that provides the clarity required for good practice without stifling that entrepreneurial spirit.
Whilst L&D can help set the stage, build the scaffolding and lead the project rolling out a new shared knowledge solution (think internal knowledge base or wiki) must involve people from across the organisation.
The biggest issue I face in trying to make it happen is the perception of what L&D should be responsible for. Many have only encountered traditional L&D teams responsible for formal learning (eLearning or instructor-led) interventions that live on an island called the Learning Management System and are only visited with dedicated time set aside, a passport, or at least a pen or pencil.
Of course, we know that learning happens off the island in greater proportions than on the island and whilst we can't control that learning we can do a lot to support it. However, it can be difficult to convince the rest of the organisation to implement real change.
Share a tool, method, or framework you find useful
-As you may have surmised, I'm a big fan of performance-based learning. I'm convinced that using evidenced-based principles in learning can fuel performance and efficiency in the organisations we support. To do this we need to align with the performance goals of an organisation. Where I work we use the 5Di model to develop learning. The model was created by Nick Shackleton-Jones and stands for define, discover, design, develop, deploy, and iterate.
I would also highly recommend Cathy Moore's Action Mapping which fits really nicely with 5Di and provides really practical advice about how to use a performance-based approach in the real world. Her book 'Map It' is a handbook every learning developer should have on their desk.
I also appreciate The Modern Learning Ecosystem - JD Dillon for a useful model of the breadth of learning initiatives in addition to formal learning and the value they bring to an organisation.
And finally, Jane Hart is the master of helping you make the theory applicable in Modern Workplace Learning, especially pertaining to social learning and knowledge sharing.
What does being an L&D Shaker look and feel like for you?
-Invigorating!
